In the field of environmental sustainability, we focus on three areas where macro-scale trends offer opportunities for innovative green technologies.
Agriculture
Global food demand will double by 2050 quickly outpacing supply. Food shortages are predicted by all leading institutions globally*, and increased consumption of meat-based proteins in the developing world will require new solutions to feed a world of 9 billion inhabitants. In light of this growth, the need to develop sustainable food production and processing technologies is adamant. Fast growing, low water absorbing plants and new animal protein sources are part of the solution for this enormous challenge.
Water
Access to fresh water is and will increasingly become one of the most pressing issues of the next century. With changes in global climate, traditional sources of fresh water risk depletion. The Southwest of the US exemplifies the dangers of failing to adapt water infrastructure to our changing climate. Opportunity exists for technology to allow better conservation of current water resources without sacrificing quality of life.
Energy
With increasing adoption and installation of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, we face growing challenges around their intermittent energy supply. A new industry (energy storage) is in its early stages, but projected to grow enormously in the next few years. New battery technology developments are being introduced to the market in an increasingly rapid pace. Energy storage cost will lower year-over-year and therefore continue to offer new opportunities for start-ups and entrepreneurs.
